Instructional League - Coach Pitch Rules

Objective:

  • Our most important objective is to provide each and every player with a fun, positive and rewarding experience.
  • First, we want our players to develop as people: to become great teammates, learn the important values of sportsmanship and hard work, and to be respectful. We believe that every player should experience success and failure and learn how to take the best out of both outcomes.
  • Second, we want to see them develop as baseball players. We want every player to have the coaching and encouragement to become the best ballplayer they can be.
  • Third, we want our players to have fun -- a huge amount of fun.  We want all of our players to remember their baseball experiences for the rest of their lives.

Basic Rules:

  • 1. Games are 6 Innings long or 90 Minutes whichever comes first.
  • 2. If a hit ball travels less than (10) feet from the home plate, it is a foul ball. (Unless you need to keep the games moving).
  • 3.  Coaches will start the season pitching. Batters will hit the ball into play or, after 5 pitches, a batting tee will be brought out to complete the at bat. After week three, kids will pitch the second, fourth and sixth innings. Coaches of the opposing team will call balls and strikes. Batters will either walk, strike out or hit the ball into play. Kids can only pitch one full inning. Kids will be replaced by coaches in the event of two hit batters or four walks.
  • 4. A Coach should play the catcher position at all times, except when kids are pitching, we will have kids catching in catcher’s gear.  A coach should be backing up the catcher at all times to speed up play and another coach behind the pitcher calling balls and strikes.  The coach behind the mound should carry 3 to 5 baseballs and reload the pitcher on passed balls.
  • 5. When not at bat, all players play in the field. Players should be rotated to different positions during the game.
  • 6. All batters and base runners must wear helmets.
  • 7. Score will not be kept.
  • 8. There will be no base stealing or base leading allowed. Players can advance one base per overthrow. Players cannot advance to home on an overthrow.
  • 9. Players have the option to take multiple bases if the ball is hit out of the infield (they must stop advancing bases when the ball is in the infield).
  • 10. Managers have the right to call their scheduled games due to inclement weather or field conditions while the game is in progress. The league will cancel any games prior to the start.  Games may be re-scheduled with the help of the managers involved and the League Director.
  • 11. Managers and/or Coaches should be on the playing field to proactively coach throughout the game and provide positive reinforcement.
  • 12.  An inning ends when three outs are made or the entire line up has batted once.
  •  13. There will be no forfeits in Instructional League. Players may be borrowed from the opposing team if necessary.
